David Voorhies, Sr.

Brother David “Big Voe” Voorhies, Sr. was born on January 10, 1956 in Bunkie, LA to the late Doc Voorhies and Lucille Campbell Voorhies. He was the youngest of seven kids. He accepted Christ as his personal savior at an early age at the Second Union Baptist Church in Bunkie, LA, where he was a faithful member until he joined the Angola Baptist Church in Woodville, MS.

Big Voe graduated from Bunkie High School in 1974. He started working at Crawford’s Grocers as a butcher until he left to begin his career as a Correctional Officer at the Louisiana Department of Corrections. He served 40 years in corrections until he retired as an Assistant Warden in 2016. It was at LSP where he met the love of his life, Bonnie Dean Scott. They were later united in holy matrimony on June 19, 1993. To this union, one child was born: Devin Voorhies of Woodville, MS.

Big Voe was excellent in sports, particularly basketball and football. Even at an early age, he developed a passion for animals and enjoyed raising his own. He would find joy in hunting, fishing, roping, building homes for his animals, operating equipment, and other outdoor activities. Big Voe was also a family-man. He never missed a game or life event. He also loved hosting cookouts, playing spades, and giving someone the name “No Dot” after a game of dominoes.

Big Voe was a man of God and his temperament always spoke without him saying a word. He had a stern yet friendly personality that touched so many lives. Big Voe was a great leader, so people naturally gravitated to and loved him. People could converse with him about any topic without judgment or unsolicited opinions. He never argued with anybody and was always there to lend a helping hand and to teach you whatever you needed to know and grow.

Big Voe leaves to cherish five sons: Deon Alfred of Las Vegas, NV, Damien Voorhies of Los Angeles, CA, David (Dionne) Voorhies, Jr of Denham Springs, LA, Davon Voorhies of Moreauville, LA, and Devin Voorhies of Woodville, MS; a host of grandchildren; six siblings: Florence Lloyd of Morton, MS, Esther (Odis) Lee of Indio, CA, Sarah Voorhies of Indio, CA, Jerry Dean Washington of Las Vegas, NV, Ethel Milhouse of Glenmora, LA, and Dock (Charlene) Voorhies of Shreveport, LA; a special daughter, Nakia “Bugg” Stewart Anderson of Woodville, MS, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Big Voe was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Dean Scott Voorhies, and his parents, Doc and Lucille Voorhies.
