Elizabeth Lewis

A Time to Be Born

Elizabeth Lewis was born on August 3, 1944, in Ferriday, Louisiana. She was the third of ten children born to the late John Lewis, Sr. and Augustine White Lewis. Elizabeth was raised in Ferriday, Louisiana, and received her education in the Concordia Parish School District, where she was mathematically proficient, possessing a strong number sense, and creative at problem solving.

In 1973, Elizabeth obeyed the Gospel of Christ and was baptized at the Church of Christ in Ferriday, Louisiana, by Brother Earl Butterworth where she was a dedicated member for 53 years. She remained a faithful member of the Church of Christ throughout her life, serving under the leadership of ministers of the Gospel, including Brother Hugh Gower, Brother Don Tate, Bro, John Dickinson, James Pasley, Larry Pasley of the Jackson Street Congregation, Brother MitchellNorman and Brother Jamie McCartney.

Elizabeth's greatest accomplishments were her unwavering love for Jesus Christ and her devotion to her family. She led by example, faithfully attending worship services at her home congregation each Sunday morning and frequently visiting the Vidalia Church of Christ for evening services whenever she had the opportunity. Members of the Ferriday congregation Lovingly rotated turns providing transportation for her each Sunday morning, ensuring she was able to attend worship unless providentially hindered. Through all adversities, Elizabeth remained steadfast in her faith and was faithful in attendance until one week before her illness.

She was a devoted volunteer at Local nursing homes, where she distributed care packages and joined in prayer and singing with those who accompanied her. Elizabeth also visited the sick in their homes and hospitals, prepared meals in her home, and delivered them to the sick and shut in.

A Time to Live

Although Elizabeth never had children of her own, she was the true matriarch of our family, a second mother whose love extended to everyone around her. She was the steady driving force behind caring for our mother during her illness and played an essential role in helping raise her nieces and nephews. With the unwavering support of her siblings, Elizabeth faithfully carried the weight of family responsibilities, always placing others before herself.

Her loving hands rocked the cradle of each of her siblings, their children, and so many family members gathered here today. She opened her home and her heart, raising several nieces and nephews as her own and lovingly caring for all of them throughout the years.

“Elizabeth possessed a remarkable memory and never forgot a birthday or wedding anniversary, each one reflecting how deeply she cherished her family. She was creative and gifted, becoming an accomplished quilter at an early age, and she expressed her love through cooking as well. Her favorites—Italian crème cheesecake, potato salad, and fried fish—will forever be tied to the warmth of her presence.

Above all, Elizabeth was a trusted spiritual advisor, offering guidance, comfort, and wisdom to those who sought her counsel. Her legacy lives on in the lives she nurtured, the traditions she upheld, and the love she so freely gave.

In her leisure time, Elizabeth enjoyed reading the Bible with her “magnifying glass”, playing bingo at the Community Senior Citizen Center, completing Bible word searches, and watching her favorite television programs, including In Search of the Lord's Way and Let the Bible Speak on Sunday mornings. In sports, the New Orleans Saints were her favorite NFL football team.
